This week in school....
- we continued to collect dry goods for the Needham Food Pantry. We are up to 99!
- Anderson shared about his weekend with Pigeon. Connor is taking home Piggie this weekend....have fun!
- We celebrated Anderson’s 1/2 birthday.
- We started our third STEAM rotation. For this term, we will have an extra art class.
- we learned about key words in nonfiction texts. When we come across a key word it is important for us to stop and make sure we understand what it means. That will help us to really get super smart about that topic.
- we learned that readers of nonfiction read and reread the pages of their books to find just the right way each page should sound.
- we learned that to share a book like an expert, you first need to notice things that are worth sharing! It helps to mark the pages where you found something interesting or important in someway (we used a post it) - parts that made you sit up and think or wonder or want to learn more.
- we started unit 8 in Fundations. We are learning about consonant blends. Consonant blends are when 2 consonants are next to each other and make 2 sounds (unlike digraphs which make 1 sound)
- we also learned about r controlled vowels. The r can change the way a vowel sounds like in car or horn.
- we had a publishing party with 3rd grade and shared our completed nonfiction books. We also shared them with Mrs. Bagley’s AM and PM kindergarten classes.
- we had a post nonfiction writing assessment and a pre opinion writing assessment.
- we brought in collections to help us get started with our next writing workshop unit of study.
- we made up a story about a snowman coming to life. (They were hysterical!)
- we continued to explore place value and understanding the value of each digit. Example: in the number 23 there are 2 tens and 3 ones. The value of the digit 2 in 23 is 20 and the value of the digit 3 is 3.
- we played a fun math game called “I have, who has?”
- Mrs. Velde was our guest reader. She read “My Very Own Name” which featured Keira’s full name. Thank you!
- we continued to explore what opaque, translucent, and transparent all mean. We made beautiful stained glass windows.
- We are officially closer to being 2nd graders than when we were kindergartners! We are on day 93!
- Molly performed in the all school assembly on Wednesday! Way to go Molly!
