Current trick words (unit 2): pull, full, shall, both, walk, talk
Our week in 2nd grade…
Reading:
- When readers solve a tricky word, they make sure that the word makes sense.
- We also noticed the directions that authors leave for readers. Authors insert punctuation and use special fonts to help people read the book they way they intended it to be read! Ask your child to read these two sentences and to tell you why the punctuation is so important! Look at the large hot dog! Look at the large, hot dog! Have your child different fonts at home (all caps, bold, italicized) and practice reading it with expression!
- Writers think of the feelings they experienced during the important moment they are writing about and then add those feelings to their stories. As we write across the pages, the feelings often change from the beginning of the story to the end.
- We learned that writers aren’t satisfied unless they find words that are just right for their stories. When they want to describe a feeling, writers reach for the word that exactly matches the feeling. Ask your child to tell you about the “shades of feelings” chart we made! Have your child to share with you one of the stories they wrote this week!
- We had a blast this week coming up with our own survey questions, gathering data, and then creating a picture or bar graph to represent our findings! Ask your child about their question and the categories they had!
- On Thursday we had our first unit assessment. Look for these in your child’s home folder on Tuesday. Click HERE to read the parents support letter for unit 2
- This week we completed week one of unit 2. We reviewed the following glued sounds:
- Am, an, all, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, and unk.
- out the parent support letter!
- To prepare for Eagle Block next week, we visited the other classrooms each morning for a different social and emotional learning read aloud/activity! This gave each second grade class an opportunity to work with each second grade teacher before finding out on Tuesday who their Eagle Block teacher for the next 6 weeks will be. Ask your child about the books the other second grade teachers read this week! We are all super excited to get started with Eagle Block on Tuesday!
- We observed 3-5 trees outside our classroom and made scientific sketches. Though the observation, we identified the basic tree parts (roots, bark, stems, trunk, leaves)
- Today we discussed the function of roots for a tree. Ask your child about the experiment we did today using tree clippings and what their prediction is!
