Reading:
- Ask your child about some of the strategies they can use to solve tricky words. When solving really hard words, we need to be flexible and use multiple strategies at the same time.
Writing
- When writers revise, they study mentor authors, thinking not only, ‘What has this author done that I could try out?’ but also ’Why has this author done this?’ Then they look at their own writing to be sure that they’ve included craft moves in ways that make sense - in ways that make their stories better!
- Ask your child about the craft moves they are including in their stories!
- We also learned about using comparisons in our writing to make it more powerful!
Math
- We completed unit 1 this week and had an end of the unit assessment today. During the past month, Students represented and solved story problems within 20 through the context of picture and bar graphs that represent categorical data. Students also learned strategies to help build fluency with addition and subtraction.
Fundations
- This week we learned about closed syllable exceptions and the glued sounds old, ost, olt, ild, and ind. Have your child tell you the different between a closed syllable (cot) and a closed syllable exception (colt).
- We reviewed the following vowel teams which were introduced last year in first grade: ai, ay, ey, ee, ea, oi, and oy.
- We completed unit 3 today. The students had an end of the unit assessment which will go home on Monday.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)
- This week we focused on having confidence and believing in yourself.
- We had our first empathy bingo drawing! Ask your child how they showed empathy or compassion (empathy in action) this week in school and at home!
