This week we continued to celebrate each student and all the different ways they are an important part of our classroom community! We celebrated Remi, Grace, Zachary, Yaseen, and Emy! We also practiced being safe during bus evacuation and had a third session exploring Osmo Detective during technology.

This week in 2nd grade....
Reading:
- We continued to read fractured fairy tales and identify which element was changed from the traditional version! Some students are even writing their own fractured fairy tales during writing workshop!
- This week students worked on revising and editing their work. Ask your child what the difference is between editing and revising!
- Editing: making it easier to read (neat handwriting, spacing, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc)
- Revising: making it interesting to read (adding more details, zooming in on a specific part, changing the main idea, adding craft moves from mentor authors, etc)
- We are just about done with our last Fundations unit which focuses on a new syllable type called consonant le. Some examples of words with this syllable type are: table, snuggle, and freckle. We will have the assessment next week.
- We began our next unit in math which focuses on adding and subtracting within 1000. Students are using strategies they learned in previous lessons as well as developing new strategies.
- This week we focused on place value understanding properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- This week we focused on growth mindset. We came up with a few different scenarios that might be challenging. Instead of having negative thoughts, students came up with lots of positive thoughts instead!
- Example: scenario - you are going to have something for dinner that you’ve never had before. Instead of thinking, “I’m not going to like this” try thinking “this might become one of my new favorite foods!”
- We found evidence of animal life outside our school and discovered ways those animals get their basic needs met. Ask your child what the basic needs are for animals and plants!
- We learned about Antarctica and started learning about Europe
