This week in 2nd grade....
- Ms. D’Amelio was our classroom teacher for three days! These were her last 3 take over days for student teaching.
- We threw a surprise birthday party for Ms. Hawkey!
- This week students continued to study characters closely.
- Readers notice clues about the character’s feelings
- Readers Expect characters to feel more than one way.
- Readers choose just-right feelings words to describe characters
- Readers ask, “WHY does the character feel this way?” and they find evidence to support their thinking.
Writing:
- Students learned how to write Haiku poems this week. They also picked their favorite poems to publish and we prepared for next week's poetry reading! These are powerful poems and we are excited to share them with you at the poetry reading!
- We learned that there are 6 ways to make the sound /ew/ and 3 ways to make the long u sound.
- We started learning about fractions (halves, thirds, fourths/quarters, and wholes)
- Learned how to compose different shapes.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning):
- We used the Problem-Solving Steps to help solve a playground problem.
- We talked about how if someone is being excluded on purpose, it’s a problem and different ways to solve that problem.
- We all agree that Inviting people to join in is the compassionate, respectful thing to do.
Science
- We made predictions about whether magnetic force can act through different objects (e.g book, table, ream of paper). We then worked in groups to complete the experiments with wand magnets. Ask your child about how magnetic force works.
Social Studies
- We began our study of the 7 continents. Ask your child to name the 7 continents and identify which is the largest. See if they can tell you the continent we learned about today (Asia) and if they can share with you a few facts they learned! We will continue to study Asia next week and we will begin to learn about Africa.
