Our week in 2nd grade…
Reading:
- This week we worked on scooping up words into phrases and reading them smoothly right from the start.
- We also reviewed all of the ways we can solve tricky words in our books. Ask your reader to show you a few different ways they can solve challenging words!
- This week we started writing personal narratives! When writers write about their lives, they search for moments that stand out from the rest. Ask your writer about some of the books they wrote this week!
- Before writers write their books, they rehearse by planning out how their books will go. They can turn the pages and then the whole story before they write, using transition words to help them identify when to turn the page!
- Personal narratives (or small moments) zoom in on one particular moment. The story starts and ends close to the most important part. If I’m writing a story about the time I saw a spider on my water bottle, I’m not going to add details about how I got to school or what I ate for dinner. Instead, I’m starting my story right before I saw the spider and ending the story right after that moment ended.
- This week we represented and solved compare problems with unknowns in all positions within 100.
- We also made sense of and interpreted tape diagrams.
- Ask your child to solve this problem and how you might represent it using a tape diagram! Mrs. Schwarm had 19 pieces of candy. Ms. Hawkey had 8 fewer pieces of candy than Mrs. Schwarm. How many pieces of candy did Ms. Hawkey have?
- We had our unit 1 assessment yesterday!
- Today we started the first week of unit 2 for Fundations. We reviewed bonus letters and the glued sound all. Ask your letter expert to tell you how to mark a bonus letter and a glued sound.
- Be sure to check out the parent support letter!
- This week we finished up unit 1 for Second Step! The first unit focused on skills for learning including focusing attention, listening with your eyes, ears, and brain, using self talk to ignore distractions, and be assertive when you need support.
- Today we started our second unit which focuses on empathy. Today we practiced looking at someones face, body language, and thinking about the situation to better understand and identify how that person might be feeling.
- We ended today practicing cooperation and being a good partner. Ask your child about the game we played! It was a super fun way to end the day!
- We celebrated the beginning of a new season! We used crayons and watercolors to paint the most beautiful fall trees. Be sure to check them out in our pictures of the week!
