Our week in 2nd grade…
Reading:
- This week we started our first unit of study which focuses on the idea that 2nd graders are now big kid readers. In second grade, we read constantly throughout the day…we are moving from the learning to read stage to the reading to learn stage which is very exciting.
- We reminded the readers about all of the strategies the learned last year in first grade. Ask your child about a strategy they use to figure out tricky words.
- We created a heart map and included all of the things that are important to us. This will help us next week when we start writing personal narratives.
- We wrote to you in our letters home notebook! Don’t forget to write a letter back to us!
- This week we Represented and interpreted data using picture and bar graphs.
- We also made sense of and interpreted tape diagrams. Ask. Your child what a tape diagram is!
- Today we started the second week of unit 1 for Fundations. We reviewed digraphs, blends, and digraph blends. Ask your child to tell you all about the things they notice about the word shred!
- We learned some rules for when to use c, k, and ck!
- ck can only come at the end of a word or syllable and the /k/ sound must be right after a short vowel like in the word duck
- If a different consonant sound follows the short vowel and then there is a /k/ sound, you would use a k like in the word milk
- Most words will start with C. You only use a K before e, I, or y.
- Be sure to check out the parent support letter!
- We discussed the importance of being a respectful learner. Ask your child what this looks like at home, at school, or somewhere else!
- We practiced different skills we can use for learning. Two of these skills are listening and focusing attention.
- We also talked about growth mindset. Ask your child what the difference between fixed mindset and growth mindset is!
- We identified the characteristics of an accurate scientific sketch. Scientists use sketches to record information. Ask your child about the things they observed this week and the words they used to describe their sketches!
- We talked about seasons changing from summer to fall! We brainstormed all the things we are looking forward to doing this fall. Ask your child what fall activities they are saying HELLO to!
- We planted seeds! We can't wait to observe them as they grow!
