Reading
- We started our nonfiction reading unit! Ask your child what they are learning about in their reading!
- we are about a quarter of the way through the chapter book "Wild Robot". Ask your child about Roz and Billbright!
- We finished publishing a story from our nonfiction unit! I will hold on to their published stories for all of the units until the end of the year. All of the other stories that the students wrote during the personal narratives unit will go home next week. Enjoy!
- We learned some new fun math games called 5 in a row and capture the square. Both games had students working on decomposing tens.
- students interpreted and solved a story problem by adding or subtracting within 100.
- students interpreted and compared representations that show decomposing a ten to subtract by place.
Fundations - This week we learned that a word needs to be divided if it has 2 vowels separated by 1 or more consonants. Here are 5 syllable division rules:
- Compound words are divided between the 2 words (bath-tub)
- Split between the 2 consonants between the vowels (mas-cot)
- Split after 1 consonant to keep the first syllable closed (hab-it)
- Split after the digraph…always keep the digraphs together (jack-et)
- If there are 3 consonants, split after the first consonant to close in the first syllable and keep the blend together for the 2nd syllable (chil-dren)
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)
- We learned that sometimes things happen by accident. When you do something by accident, having empathy helps you think about how the other person might feel. Then it’s important to take responsibility and apologize. If you’ve done something by accident, you can say it was an accident, apologize, or offer to help.
- Ask your child about the differences between coniferous trees and deciduous trees!
