This week in second grade:
- Yaseen shared about his week with JiJi and Ava took JiJi home for some math fun!
- We celebrated Diana's birthday
- Ava was the assistant teacher.
- We are almost done reading Wild Robot! Ask your child about the characters in this story and the problems they have had. Have your child tell you what they think might happen at the end of the story. It has been such an exciting book to read!
Reading:
- When you are trying to read words and nothing else has worked, you can count the vowels and use that count to figure out how many syllables there are. Then you can tackle that longer word, syllable by syllable, part by part.
Writing:
- Our writing partners helped us to include reasons and details to support our opinions in our writing about reading letters. Ask your child about the book they are writing about and what their opinion is about that book. Why do they feel that way? Are they able to give you some examples to pursued you to feel the same way?
Fundations:
- We learned new r-controlled vowels. These three r-controlled vowels (er, ir, ur) all make the same sound. When writing a word that has this sound, it can be helpful to try it three ways and ask which one looks right?
- Example: twerl, twirl, twurl
Math:
- This week students interpreted and solved two-step problems involving length. An example of a two step problem is: “Jon is working on a school project. He has 98 inches of ribbon. He gave 28 inches of ribbon to his friend. He only needs 25 inches of ribbon for his project. How much ribbon will Jon have left over?”
- This week we also generated measurement data and represented the data in a line plot. A line plot is a way to show how many of each measurement using an x for each measurement.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning):
- This week we practiced using belly breathing to calm down strong feelings, like after we’ve made a mistake. Ask your child how mistakes help them to grow and learn. When we feel strong feelings about making mistakes, it’s important to calm down so we can think, learn, and ask for help when we need it.

Social Studies:
- We learned about the Lunar New Year.
