What a fun week in Room 158! We celebrated Emy's 1/2 birthday, Emy and Dylan shared about their week with Jiji, we participated in the hour of code, and we watched our 3rd 4th and 5th grade bands perform! We ended the week with an amazing winter celebration! Thank you to the room parents for organizing the party and to all of the volunteers for running the stations. Everyone had an amazing time!

Reading
- This week we explored nonfiction text sets. These are books on the same topic. We learned that when you are interested in learning about a topic, it's helpful to find other nonfiction books on the same topic! When we do that, we read each new book a little differently...thinking about what we have already learned about the topic and adding to what we know! Ask your child about the nonfiction text sets they are reading and what they are learning about!
- We learned that nonfiction writers consider their audience when writing their all about books. Is their book intended for little kids? Adults? Please who love to bake? Then, we think about the questions they may ask and we make sure we include that information in our books.
- We completed unit 2 in math and had an end of the unit assessment on Friday. This week we practiced using different strategies for adding 3 double digit numbers and for solving word problems with two parts.
- example: Zoey found 38 shells on Monday and 29 shells on Tuesday. How many shells did she find altogether? On Wednesday, she gave Hadley 18 of the shells. How many does Zoey have now?

- We will be finishing up unit 6 next week and taking an end of the unit assessment on Tuesday. This week we learned that s can make the /s/ sound or the /z/ sound when it is between two vowels. (wise, case). If we try it one way and it doesn't make sense, we can try it the other way.
- We practiced writing words with different syllable types. ex: athlete. The first syllable ath is a closed syllable. The second syllable lete is a V-E syllable. Have your child mark the following words for you and ask them to explain to you the syllable type and what that does to the vowel!
- stampede
- baseball
- lifetime
- stampede
- We also learned that the glued sound ive is a V-E exception. Sometimes the I in ive makes the short sound like in give and sometimes it makes the long sound as in hive.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)
- This we we learned how to refuse bullying! Ask your child how to refuse bullying in a strong, assertive voice!
