Reading
- When reading non fiction books, it’s important to think about what we already know. This is called our background knowledge. This can help us better understand what we are learning.
- We began writing non fiction All About books. These books are full of facts that teach our readers about the topic.
- We learned about different types of nonfiction text features that help the reader to learn more about the topic. Ask your child about some of the text features they are adding to their non fiction books (ie. table of contents, diagram, captions, heading, glossary, etc)
- We practiced adding and subtracting with double digits.
- We needed to decompose tens for some subtraction problems and regroup ones to make a ten for addition problems.
- We learned lots of different ways to solve double digit addition and subtraction problems. Ask your child to show you their favorite way to solve the following problems!
- 27 + 35 =
- 65 - 28 =
- 27 + 35 =
Fundations
- We learned many new suffixes in Fundations including -ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -ish, -en, -able. Ask your child how these suffix endings change the meaning of the word!
- We had our end of the unit check In today for unit 5. This will go home on Monday.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)
- We learned that sometimes things happen by accident. When you do something by accident, having empathy helps you think about how the other person might feel. Then it’s important to take responsibility and apologize. If you’ve done something by accident, you can say it was an accident, apologize, or offer to help.
- Ask your child about the differences between coniferous trees and deciduous trees!
