This week in 2nd grade....
Reading:
- We began our last unit which focuses on Folk Tales! Folk tales are stories that are passed down orally through generations. There are lots of different types of folk tales. This week we focused on fairy tales. Ask your child to tell you about some of the special elementents of a fairy tale!
Writing:
- This week students continued to write in the genre of their choice and worked on student engagement. We are really building up our stamina for third grade writing and setting goals for ourselves daily. Ask your child about their writing topic and genre and what it means to be engaged in their writing.
- One thing writers can do to make their writing more powerful is to “show, not tell”. Ask your child about this strategy and how they are incorporating it into their work.
Fundations:
- This week we started and completed unit 16 for Fundations! Ask your child about the three ways to make the aw sound (aw, au, short o). Today we had an end of the unit assessment. Look for it in your child’s home folder on Monday. Next week we will start our 17th (and final!!!) Fundations unit.
Math:
- This week we identified a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar along with their value. We figured out the value of a collection of coins and bills as well as figured out different ways to make a certain amount.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning):
- This week we talked about bubble thoughts. Ask your child what a bubble thought is and and why they are important in building relationships.
Science
- We started our final science unit this week which focuses on water habitats. Ask your child about Buddy! Buddy is going to help us learn about habitats and how he gets his needs met!
Social Studies
- This week we learned about the third largest continent, North America. Ask your child to tell you the following about North America:
- 2 facts
- animals
- landmarks
