The whole school is working on demonstrating the Eliot school values and being role models for each other throughout the day! Students can earn and Eliot Eagle card for their class by being “caught” being a role model by another teacher or staff member in the school. This could be in the hallway, recess, lunch, classroom, nurses office…everywhere! So far we have earned 8 Eliot Eagle Cards. Ask your child about the Eliot Eagle cards and what we plan to do when we get 40!

- This week we talked about how lovely it is to get “lost in a story”. This is when you feel like you are right there with the characters and going on adventures with them. As readers, we are constantly thinking about what might happen next. We can predict how the story will go based on what has already happened. Ask your child how we were able to make some predictions with the mentor text “My Father’s Dragon”.
- We also talked about how getting lost in a story is not just seeing the story in our mind, but also having and noticing our own reactions to what is happening in the story.
- We began studying characters closely. We can get to know more about the characters in our stories by paying attention to clues, like what characters say, what happens to their bodies, the situation they might be in…these are all ways the author gives the reader hints about the character’s feelings.
- This week we learned about acrostic poetry. An acrostic poem is a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, name, or phrase when read vertically. Have your child write an acrostic poem for you!
- The second grade classes are putting together an assembly to teach the rest of the school about Earth Day! This will be the first in person assembly for the whole school since Covid. We are thrilled to be the first grade level to do this! Our class is responsible for writing an acrostic poem. Ask your child about the letter they are responsible for and what their letter stands for. The assembly will be in a few weeks and we will be sure to record it and send it home!
- We read the important book and identified the little things that make something important. Ask your child what their important poem was about.
- We completed unit 13 in Fundations and had an end of the unit assessment today! Look for it in your child’s folder on Monday. We will start unit 14 next week.
- Students compared 3 digit numbers using their understanding of place value. Students used different representations of the number to help explain their thinking.
- We practiced solving problems using S-T-E-P. Ask your child what the letters in STEP stand for! (S - say the problem, T - think of a solution, E - explore consequences, P - pick a solution)
- The solutions must be safe and respectful so no one’s body or feelings are hurt.
