- We have grown in many ways over the past few years. As we grow, one of the things that changes is the way we read and the books we read. This week we learned that readers don’t only get to read harder and longer books; they also get to be in charge of their own reading. They get to choose not only what they are going to read but also how they are going to read.
- We began reading assessments this week and will continue to assess over the next two weeks. Your child may be pulled by a reading coach (Melanie Sullivan, and Margaret Berges) or our liaison, Anne Burgholzer. This does not mean that your child is receiving reading help. It's just an all hands on deck approach to get the assessments completed in a short window of time.
- This was a big week in writing workshop! We learned how to plan our personal narratives so that they stretched over several pages. By zooming in and adding lots of details, we are able to help the reader picture the story the writer is telling. Ask your child about their personal narratives and what they are doing to improve their writing!
- We played games to practice adding within 50. Ask your child about the strategies they are using when adding numbers like 23 + 42 or 27 + 36.
- We also collected data and represented it in different ways. We answered questions and discussed the need to represent data in an organized way.
- We completed unit 1 of Fundations and had an end of the unit assessment today. Please look for a copy of this assessment in your child’s home folder on Monday. Next week we will start unit 2. I have attached a copy of the unit 2 Fundations home support pack to our weekly email. Please let me know if you would like a hard copy sent home!
- This week we learned that being assertive in a respectful way can help us be a better learner. When we are assertive, our head and shoulders up and we speak in a calm, firm, respectful voice.
- We identified the characteristics of an accurate scientific sketch. Scientists use sketches to record information. Ask your child about the things they observed this week and the words they used to describe their sketches!
